It’s always easier to look away.
Darwin would say
that’s all about survival—
The strong prove that they’re strong when they can say
They treat the
weakest like a worthless rival.
But what survives when we choose not to see
Is blindness—which
is only the extension
Of animal superiority
That says the weak
aren’t worthy of attention.
So if I would be better than the beast
Inside me, let me
never fail to be
Human and strong enough to aid the least,
The lost, and all
in pain or misery
Till charity’s
the habit of our kind
And no one
living now gets left behind.
